Re: Happy combinations

Hi, Chris & all,
Yes, superb color combinations are so much fun. 'Starfire'deep red
phlox with Imperata (Red Baron) grass in clumps among them is a
stronger combination -- great with silver artemisa 'Powis Castle'
and white lilies.

I love to experiment with good foliage mixes, too -- wide leaves
of hostas with grassy or ferny things, deep red or purple foliage with
grey or gold, broad spreading clumps of hostas or rodgersias or
ligularias with tall iris foliage. There are times of the year with
little is blooming in the long shade bed and yet it's the most colorful
part of the garden (and the tidiest, since little trimming or grooming
is required).

There is a shrubby clematis (not a vine, but I tie it up to serve
as one) with magnificent wide dark green leaves and little nodding
bells of pale blue in August here in Chicago. The buds are effective
weeks before they open -- and this does very well in shade! I believe
it's C. heracleifolia -- supposed to go to 4 feet, but tied up, it
makes six feet plus. With clumps of polygonatum variegatum (variegated
Solomon's seal) near it, and more clumps of white astrantia, it's a
lovely August sight.

Yes, the blue pinks and the salmon pinks don't blend very well,
and often the descriptions aren't as precise as they could be,
so we don't know until bloom time!
