New gardener

Hi!

I absolutely love flowers! We bought a house a year ago with
nothing but lawn, so last summer I started 2 flower beds with
perennials and annuals. One bed has a section with only herbs.
Now what I'm wondering is; does it take a few years for the
perennials to get full? My plants did well, but they weren't very
full. I'm new to growing flowers, and I don't understand exactly
what I'm suppose to do with the soil. From what I've been told,
the soil is the right texture, not too sandy, and not too much
clay. Can anyone recommend some websites and books to read?
Do I just need patience and wait for the plants to get fuller?
Some perennials I've planted are; hosta, jacob's ladder, astilbe,
snow in the summer, iris, sedum, dragon's blood, garlic chives,
creeping thyme, oregano, and others I can't remember.
Do I have to fertilize.....what kind......when.....how often?
I'd appreciate any help. Thanx
