You know Nan, I hope I don't sound at all
argumentative, but I never do this!  Maybe it
depends on where you live?  We get so much rain
in Oregon it might rain it off the crown sooner?  The
only plants that I keep compost away from the stem
is climatis, until they are mature enough to be
woody stemmed.

What are others' experiences?

mulch/compost.  Just remember to keep
the material away from the BASE of the plants.  If
you get it too close,
the plant can rot out from too much moisture around
the stem/base.
Depending upon the size of the plant and how
close you can get to the
actual stem  or leaves, be sure to leave three to six
inches clear around
each plant
