One of the houses in town has dark red tulips that come up through a bed of
forget me nots. They make a very lovely combination, and then from what I
can see they discard the forget-me-nots after blooming and plant out annuals
to cover the browning foliage. I'm sure you could do the same thing with
some of the perennials that are late starting out of the ground. Also,
doronicum makes an excellent combination with many bulbs, if the colours are
compatible with the yellow daisy type flowers. The chordate leaves of the
doronicum make a good textural contrast with the longer leave of tulips and
daffodils for example.
