I have planted a wide variety of bulbs and have never been at all careful
about recommended depths, and they have all done very well. In my
experience, the most critical thing has been planting them with some bulb
food, and feeding them when they flower.
Also, where does everyone stand on the "leave the foliage until it rots off"
issue? I ask because a couple of years ago, I read in a gardening magazine
that research had shown that after the bulbs faded, leaving the foliage for
3 to 3 1/2 weeks helped the plant manufacture and store food, but that
leaving them on any longer had a negligible effect. Since then I have
always trimmed to foliage at 3-4 weeks after flowering stopped, and I have
continued to have the same excellent results from my bulbs.
