I, too, have bent or broken many trowels in our clay. I now use things a
bit stronger. If planting by myself, I use a 2 inch wide "nail" bar. If two
of us are planting, we use either a spade or a "crow" bar. Not the curved
necked wrecking bar (too narrow) but something similar to a "spud" or
debarking chisel. Chisel end is about 3 inches wide welded to a steel bar
about 4 feet or so long.
