I use circles of wire fencing for my composting and I use the weed
whacker to do the job. Wrap the bin with Remay, burlap or an old sheet
and safety pin to hold it. Dump about 3-4" of refuse in the bin and
whack away. I've also seen a suggestion to put garden refuse in a trash
barrel and weed whack in that but you would need an awfully small line
length on the trimmer.

If the garden refuse is smallish and dry running it over with the lawn
mower works well. If it's at all damp it will stick to the mower deck.

Rose thorns are somewhat slow to break down can be quite mean and nasty
when sifting finished compost. Also, some people don't compost them
because of concerns about spreading disease. I put my rose canes on a
small brush pile in a back corner of the yard that I keep for a hiding
place for birds and a bunny family.

The electric shredders are just a string trimmer in a can. It doesn't
seem worth the expense if you already have a mower or string trimmer.
If you have mass quantities of leaves in the fall I would think renting
one of the large sucker/shredder things would be cheaper and more
convenient than owning one. There is also the possiblilty of sharing
the rental expense with a neighbor.
