Laurie, the White Knight Shasta (from Burpee I think) grows very
well from seed and should bloom the same year if you start it early
enough. Yes, the Shastas are all Chrysanthemum x superbum, bred
from native daisies by Luther Burbank all those years ago. Alaska
does well for me but I haven't grown it from seed. The Ox-eye daisy
is an earlier blooming wild form and I hear it can be a nuisance in
its tendency to spread. "May Queen" is a named form of this type.
For those who like the white daisies, I had some plants last year
of tanacetum corymbosum from Bluestone. This is an old single form
of feverfew, but the flowers are almost 2 inches across and look
like small Shastas. Very nice plant, good filler in both the garden
and for cutting.
