Thanks, Bob!
Although I'm not too familiar with the Alpine-L rules of conduct, I'm
sure that they're pretty universal. On the Mallorn lists new members
are asked to refer to RFC 1855, called "Netiquette Guidelines" at
http://www.mallorn.com/lists/netiquette.html#OneToMany
For those who don't know what an RFC is, it's the rulebook on
which the Internet is founded. All services that you use (email,
Web, networking) are outlined in the RFCs. When somebody invents
something like the idea of a mailing list an RFC is created so
that other developers or users can know how to interface with
it.
What does that mean? Just that these netiquette guidelines are an
accepted, Internet-wide standard (even though this RFC has a disclaimer at
the top). We're not sitting around making up policy as we fit; rather,
we try to enforce the more global standards.
The link above is specific to mailing list etiquette, but there's
a lot more information in there. Just go to the top-level URL
if you want to see more:

There's also a more concise list of suggested behaviors at
ftp://ftp.temple.edu/pub/info/help-net/netiquette.infohn
