Winter Interest

The current warmer-than-normal temperatures encourages one to think that
spring will be here fast. But I've lived in Cincinnati a long time and
know that Mother Nature will favor us with more winter weather, a heavy
freeze or two.

Here are the things that I am enjoying in my yard in this bleak season:
the grey color of artemesia,
the black-eyed susans and the finches are, too!
a heuchera 'Violet Ruffles' that really has violet leaves
and ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant', nice burgundy colored foliage.

But what has really tickled me is a leftover 7 foot sunflower stalk in
the front perennial bed right at the street. It has a very thick stalk
and the seed head just bent over and faced the ground, and all turned
totally black. It looks very architectural, like a lamppost. And I see
people, stand out there and look at it, look under it at the seeds that
are no longer there, and scratch their heads. It does look a little like
a giant pinesap fungus!
