Title: Re: bamboo
Hold on here a minute. I just finished researching an
article on bamboo and the bamboos you all are referring to are
"running" bamboos -- they spread by underground
rhizomes. There are also "clumping" bamboos that do
not spread by underground rhizomes, they pretty much stay where you
put them. Remember, bamboo is a grass -- some grasses spread by
rhizomes and some do not (runners vs bunchers). The problem is,
when most folks buy bamboo, they don't get the information they need
to know what kind they are buying. Running bamboos MUST
be contained either in a pot or by some kind of root barrier, while
clumping bamboos do not require that kind of control.
So the answer to Duncan's dilemma is to plant a clumping bamboo
rather than a running bamboo. The American Bamboo Society has a
FABULOUS website that includes descriptions of hundreds of genera and
species. Go to http://www.bamboo.org/abs/

I must second Marge's thoughts on this plant - nothing
will stop its advance and spread! We used what I
believe is a railroad tie as a 'divider' - bamboo has
come through this 8" x 8" treated lumber! In a number
of places! It is absolutely relentless!
Does anyone have any information on preparing the
young shoots as salad or stir-fry addition?
After about 7 years as a bamboo 'owner' everyone in my
family has windchimes, planters, baskets, etc. made of
this stuff! And yet there's plenty more where it came
from!
