Before reading your second paragraph, I was already thinking purple
Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria).  I suppose, now that it's so widespread,
there is some regional variation but what grows around here usually has
plain green leaves and stems.  The plant itself is quite drab.  The
flower spikes are indeed 6-8" long/tall and 3/4"-1" wide.  The individual
flowers are quite small.  The flower color is pretty much identical to
the flower color of Liatris.  Sounds like that might be what you have.
