Re: More Crayola Red Perennials

Dean,

yes, my astilbe 'Fanal' is a gorgeous blood red. The funny thing is that I
bought it at K-Mart when it was in bloom. And as we all know, K-Mart is
not known to have the most exotic of plant collections or the most
accurately labeled items. Me now thinks I could have been hoodwinked as to
the cultivar. But I'm not complaining! It looks great in deep shade with
the hostas.

One thing I thought of is that what could start out as red at the nursery
could very well end up being another color in my garden due to the amount
of sun, soil minerals, weather, and other factors. What could be red for
me in Kentucky could very well look pinkish in Florida. Another thing to
consider is what you have planted around your plants. Blue flowers bring
out the violet undertones, while yellow will bring out the orange. Then
again, my boyfriend and I have had arguments about a particular polo shirt
he has whether it's red or maroon. He calls it 'red' when it is most
obviously 'maroon'. When I show him what I consider to be red, he'll
call it 'dark pink' (I think he's just being difficult). It's all in
perception sometimes.
