Re: Crocosmia&Echinops

I do not grow Echinops here, but my partner does try to grow Crocosmia. She loves this plant, but we have trouble with the foliage. Just as the crocosmia comes into bloom the foliage begins to turn spotted and turns a tan shade with the green. By the time the blooms are at their peak the foliage is streaked, brown and yucky looking. I have notice that this happens at the local nursery as well. In fact, I have seen it in several garden centers. Are they all obtaining their plants from the same wholesale source and that source is infected with something? Is this happening to anyone else out there?

Friends,
Anyone have the Crocosmia "Solfatare" or "Solfataire"?  I'm curious about
whether it is hardy in zone 7-8, and whether it is as much of a knockout as
it was shown in a recent issue of Sunset, as well as how tall it is.

Also, why is it that every blue Echinops ritro that I see  (namely Taplow
blue), is twisted up & diseased with what appears to be at the very least a
severe aphid-attack, and the Arctic Glow (white) variety is perfectly
healthy?      I've seen this situation repeated in private gardens(including
my own) and nursery offerings as well--plants that are growing next to each
other or being stocked near each other showing completely different
characters.
I'd love to grow one blue in color, and I've seen some that look healthy in
published photos, but my experience has jaded me.  Perhaps there is a variety
that one can count on? Suggestions?
