Thanks, Gene & Donna - I don't know about Wild Ones. Do they have a web
site, literature?  We'll be out of town on Aug. 12, otherwise I would
definitely try to make the open house then.  I know the Prairie Nursery
in Wisconsin offers advice on eliminating weeds without Round-up (though
they do use it) involving cultivating every two weeks religiously for
several months. Covering two acres w/black plastic also sounds
unrealistic....  To be perfectly frank, I do garden organically but my
garden is not what I'd describe as 'wild' - have 14 roses and want more
(but I still don't spray!). I just tend to get rid of plants that are
too disease or insect-prone. Since all this organic talk may be somewhat
off-topic, feel free to e-mail me privately.
