I have had the same problems with Astilbe so no longer grow any of them. I
don't have water to save them when there is a dry week. They can be
luxurious in growth in some gardens, maybe a deep moist soil but not for me.
They certainly are hardy enough, you don't lose them but they never look good
so they are banished in my garden. There are so many choice of Astilbe, the
very small ones, Astilbe chinensis pumila - hope that is right, do better but
are not magic. In a dry season, they also brown off. At some point one has
to accept that everything will not grow in your conditions. Astilbes do not
like mountains. Isabelle, I am sorry you have not had all this rain, you
certainly could have some of ours. It is bad summer for roof leaks. There
have been two cool, humidity free breezy days this week. If the summer could
only be just like this. The electrical storms have not been bad this year,
have not bought one modem yet.
