You know it's dry when your lamb's ears start to turn brown and crispy
from lack of moisture... Between the drought and the Japanese beetles,
I'm about to give up on gardening! (well, not quite).

I was trying to find homes for some of my latest acquisitions and was
shocked to see that my Rhododendron mucronulatum was almost totally
defoliated by those pests. On the plus side, the paper birch that
shades the SW corner of my house hasn't been touched by them at all.

Last year that poor birch lost about 50% of its leaves. The house became
unbearably hot, the plants underneath were cooking (not to mention being
smothered in beetle droppings). I treated the tree with Bayer's new
"Advanced Garden" Tree and Shrub Insect Control (a systemic insecticide
available from most stores) this spring, and it seems to have done the
trick.
