Re: dahlia question

I don't know if this is the reason, but I've sometimes had bloom problems
if I don't divide the root before planting-- many skinny shoots and poor
bloom.

I don't grow them any more except 3 plants that have inexplicably lasted
in the ground through 2 winters. While I haven't bothered dividing them I
always cut off all but one or two shoots and have gotten heavy bloom.

If you want a great dahlia drool try www.connells-dahlias.com They have
several hundred different kinds in their catalogue. You might note that
unless you grow them the exhibitors' way, with heavy disbudding and
fertilizing, the flowers will not be as large as the catalogue says. This
is a plus in my opinion as I hate a 10" flower, and you get more but
smaller flowers.

I quit growing them because my prized and expensive kinds always, always,
always rot away in storage and I was tired of buying them. I tried
storing them in peat moss in the house (cool and warm rooms), in the
garage, and in the refrigerator. No luck. Anyone able to keep them over
without fancy storage facilities?
