It's been my experience that most cannas overwinter best if they are left with some soil around them. This may not be necessary with the large rhizomed types, but for those like 'Australia' or 'Stuttgart', I keep potted with occasional watering. They are all in my basement, with temps about 60F.Cannas are amazingly tolerant of less than ideal conditions. As long as they can produce a rhizome, even a small one, they should store overwinter. Winter storage conditions - I have to admit - I have not perfected yet. I've either dried everything into mummies or rotted them to slime. Boyce Tankersley btankers@chicagobotanic.org
