Perennials--where are you?

Funny, I thought I'd be overgrown with weeds this year with all the rain - but
there are fewer than usual. Maybe because I've kept fertilizing my good plants
so that they've crowded them out. Have been doing more spraying than weeding.
Also, we finally have big enough trees that I can start pruning out some of the
lower branches so we can walk under them!
Does anyone have any suggestions about what might grow under a walnut tree?
Hostas? Ferns? I have given up on things blooming. We love it because it
shades the front of the house, but now there's too much shade! I know some
things are allergic to walnut roots, but we do have nandina and those anemone-
looking weeds with the tiny burs coming up. There must be some more things,
things I'd rather have.
Temps in the 90s here, so I get out in the yard mostly in the morning, or at
sunset.
