I love Lamium in the shade (dead nettle). It comes in variegated leaf forms (Chequers is a good example) and has really nice flowers - pinks and white. It spreads politely, so if it gets in the way of other things, you can just give it a yank.
Pulmonaria is also nice (looks like a spotted host) but I find in my little area of zone 5 it's prone to mildew. Even if it does get ugly I just cut the affected leave off and it comes back fresh.
Ligularia is nice too, with big tropical looking leaves (some are burgundy on the underside) and lovely yellow daisy-like or rocket-type flowers.
Tricyrtis (toad lily)is iffy in our zone - at least in my experience. Mine blooms faithfully in November - if it isn't frozen black by a hard freeze. But those years it is mild, it's wonderful to have flowers in November!
