Re: Dividing daylilies

If I end up breaking the root system and/or lose a lot of dirt, I have lots better luck if I cut back the foliage. The plant then can expend its energy into reestablishing the root system and then grows lush new leaves.

Also, try to stick to 2 fan divisions as a minimum. I only go to one, if and only if, it splits off by its self!

I have divided down to 1 fan, but like you say it takes awhile for them to produce lots of blooms ...
I don't normally cut the foliage since I've always believed that is how they feed, maybe that's daffodils.

Did you cut the foliage off when you divided the daylilies? I could not
believe that doing that could make such a difference in how the plants
grow but now I do that all the time. Also reducing the plant to 3 fans
is about all you should cut and replant. One can over divide them and
it does take time to rebuilt the energy to bloom good. I find it takes
about three years to get a nice clump with a lot of blooms here in
Tennessee.
