Actually I dont think it's dumb at all. I worked out how to do it by
trial and error---but I don't know if it's the " right way". What I do is
string a line where I want the edge to be, pull it taut, quite close to the
ground. Then I position the edging tool close to and parallel to the line,
and go along, stepping on the tool to make a cut in the grass down to the
depth of the tool. I try to slant it a little and kind of lever up the
roots a litte as I withdraw the tool. Then I use an old potato digger to
dig up the weeds and grass clumps I've loosened on the bed side, shake them
out, and throw them in my compost. It looks great right after I do it. I
find it easier on my back to go along on my knees with the potato digger
(which has a broken off handle) than to use a hoe or cultivator and do it
standing up.
I don't know if this is clear- it's hard without pictures. If anyone has
any other ideas I'd be glad to hear them as well. I wondered if you're
supposed to be able to rock the digging tool--why does it have rounded
sides? Judy Warner
