First off - I'm from the upper midwest - so I may be a little off, but
not by much I hope.
I've found planting daylillies (I love them all) and daffodils together
work very nicely. They come back easily and each allows space for the
other. If you're working from scratch, plant the daylillies first and
fill in underneath them with daffodils (less chance of disturbing the
bulbs).
In the spring it's splendid color, and the new daylily leaves cover the
fading leaves of the daffodils later in the spring. They don't bloom at
the same time so mixing colors isn't a problem. I've found it to be
mostly maintenance free. Good luck!
