Hi to East coast gardeners: I'm gardening north of Seattle, admittedly
spoiled in this beautiful place, trying to guide my son and daughter in
law in planning a perennial garden in Milton,MA, USDA 6, I think. They
are busy professional types who need a bullet-proof plan for what I hope
will be year-round interest in their southwest-facing front yard. Its a
typical town lot with a small lawn which is OK, newly surfaced bluestone
walk to the 60+ yr old clapboard house with a red (!) front door. They
have a neglected but potentially nice hydrangea paniculata too close to
the house, but a nice anchor on the driveway side, scruffy overgrown
spireas, and want a reasonably low maintenance planting along the front
of the house and along the new front walk. I've already planted a hedge
of ilex meserveae ('Blue Girl' and a 'Blue Boy') on one side of the walk
between it and the neighbor's drive, but probably won't visit at
planting time till next late spring. I'm envisioning a combo of shasta
dasies, daylilies and coreopsis for sturdy color, but wonder if they
will be as effective in that climate as they are here? They want a
euonymus alata (sigh) but the house is newly painted sort of sage green,
and there is that red door...I need help in keeping it simple and
learning about the heat, humidity, cold conditions as I've always lived
on the West coast. What can I get them going on this fall? They want
spring-flowering bulbs in there too. The semi-shady side bed and back
yard are projects for next year. Remember, these aren't yet the
gardeners we are, but I'm hoping. Suggestions? thanks! Pam ps: what
about clematis ternifolia climbing up the lattice on the front porch?
Reflected heat is a problem with the house in summer.
