How much age? When my son, who just turned 19, was in first grade the
children planted hosta seeds for their mothers on Mother's Day. He was so
proud and excited when he brought me that tiny plant in a paper cup. I gave
my gift a place of honor by the front door where it remains to this day. In
13 years, the boy and the plant have done quite a bit of growing!

But, how long do I have to wait until the leaves are not tasty to slugs? This
is the only plant in my garden that the slugs eat. I let nature balance
itself in my yard, but, given the sentimental value of this plant, I make an
exception and put out beer traps to protect it. The kids like to joke about
the drunk slugs in our yard, but it does work. But it would sure be nice not
to have to bother with it. --Janis
