Jeanne-- This is a weird idea, but how about pounding some sort of
big sheets of plastic, metal or something (any material that won't leech
into the soil and hurt the plants) down along the fence between your
property? If you pound them down with a mallet (like pounding in edging)
down a couple of feet, the roots probably will meet the barrier and turn
off into another area of his yard rather than having to tunnel way down.
I've never heard of anyone doing this, but I can't think of anything else
offhand. Good luck!
