I am assured by people on the lily list that such a disappearance will
happen if your soil is alkaline. The orientals are only happy in soil that
is at least slightly acid. Perhaps some peatmoss or doses of fertilizer
intended for rhodedenrons would clear up the problem. Additionally all
lilies hate to have their feet wet in the winter, and will rot if that
happens. Finally they seem to need regular doses of compost or they will
fade away as well. Could be any of those,but the feeding and the acid soil
are probably the most controllable. I'd try both, and plant any new bulbs
in lightly shaded areas with good drainage if you have them. Trumpets seem
slightly more flexible and the asiatic hybrids seem to like full sun and
not be picky about soil conditions. By growing all three you can stretch
your bloom season quite a bit.
