Every year I have had at least one Snapdragon survive the winter with no mulch
or any protection. Usually, they don't do as well when this happens, but this
year they are doing better than the ones I carefully planted. The peculiar
thing is that they are planted out in the open this time. Normally, I plant
them up next to the house. These even survived the extreme cold and snow we
had for two weeks in March after they were actively growing.

I think if you plant them in a container, you get a better chance of them
self-sowing. A friend of mine has a large planter of petunias that self-sow
every year.
