no pesticides means easy natural control in my garden

I wanted to add that I also use no pesticides in my garden. I do mechanical
things like hosing off the aphids, and I have owned commercial pesticides for
five years, but I have never used them. Every spring it gets a little scary
as the bugs that leave holes in my plants move in, but it seems that just when
I can stand it no longer, the birds or the beneficial insects move in and take
care of the problem. This year I didn't think I could stand the damage to my
lillies and roses another day, then as suddenly as a single week later there
were no more holes. I don't even know what got the bugs for sure, although I
did notice a lot of baby birds-doves, blue jays, cardinals, mockingbirds and
robins--in the area about the same time. Many people can't distinguish a baby
bird from an adult, and their awareness of birds is limited enough that if
they see a bird at all, it is probably a baby and they just don't realize it.
Many birds are full grown when just out of the nest, but they are
inexperienced and follow their parents until their parents ditch them. When
they find a nice safe garden, especially one with bugs, they tend to hang out
in the area and linger long enough for people to admire them.

Any ideas or deterrents? I don't use chemical pesticides in my garden
either, Not for any greater good, but because I'm too cheap to buy them.
