Yes, I remember hearing on our local radio station that hikers were
strongly advised to wear bells on their shoes to protect them from the
bears on the trails in the National Forest here (which comprises almost
a million acres of glacial mountains). But we were warned to still be
watchful for signs of bear in the form of bear droppings which are seen
in bear frequented areas. Bear droppings are easily identified by the
presence of bells in the contents.
