Pat--
No, you are not nuts at all.  Any sane person would take their compost along
when they moved!  (But, it might be a good idea not to mention this to your
non-gardenig friends.)  

You don't need enough compost to do the grade.  You want some natural soil
because it contains lots of good stuff like minerals and microorganisms.  
If you don't have enough compost to amend your soil, and you don't have a free
source, you can always buy some.  

The catwalk question is difficult to answer.  Is this a design question or a
matter of preventing erosion?  You may need to give us more details.  

Wow!  The idea of having a whole new yard to garden is kind of exciting!
