Six inches (that's 1.8 cu. yd/100 sq. ft.) of compost worked into the soil
works well on clay soils here. There are lots of fancy formulas recommended,
but I believe it is hard to come up with anything better than lots of good,
plain old compost.
You might want to ask questions about the source of the topsoil you are
having brought in for grading. The term topsoil is very loosely defined in
the industry. When excavations are made the soil is often turned upside down.
Some contractors define "topsoil" as whatever was on top when they collected
it. Buyer beware!
