Another slug thought

I was reviewing some old e-mails sitting on my laptop and came across
this from a dog list I'm on -- one trick we've explored here, and one we
haven't: oat bran.

"Here's an inexpensive organic trick you might try to ward those ugly
buggers
from trespassing - i use it throughout my vegetable and flower gardens
and
believe my slug population is significantly lower than previous years as
a
result. (i live near the woods so ill never rid ourselves permanently
unfortunately). get oat bran from any feed store and sprinkle
generously
around your home. Tigger and Pooh are disinterested in the "cereal"
thus
far, but no harm done if they do ingest (a little extra fiber?).
Supposedly
the fibrous content wreaks havoc with the little buggers intestines.
An
organic fast-acting and more pricey alternative is diatomaceous earth
(do
NOT get the swimming pool kind which is partially synthetic i
believe/highly
toxic). It's an extremely fine powder that dehydrates the slugs when
ingested. For both alternatives to remain effective, its best you
refresh
the oats or diatomaceous earth after heavy rains."
