I did this very same thing too.  But then I read of the great idea of
hydrating them first, before mixing them in the hole (I think it was Ann
Lovejoy, but I'm not sure.).  It works great, you know exactly how much you
are putting in.  However, this brings its own caution.  Don't leave them
hydrated too long, unless you don't mind green algae growing in the bucket.

Between the polymer crystals and more mulch this year, I think my watering
needs are down by 2/3!  Its wonderful!
