I recently abandoned the "spray with 1/3 vinegar, 2/3 water" solution.
Although it works, it takes 2 - 4 attacks to kill the big boys. Last night
I spent an hour at it. Now I scan every hour or so with and pick them off
the plants or ground by hand and put them in a can with the vinegar
solution above. But for the thoughts:
1) When I killed them on the ground - that is on a wood or paving surface -
with the spray, the next night there would be a crowd of fresh, live slugs
gathered at the bodies of the dead slugs. They would be caressing them.
The dead became a bait.
2) My garden is bordered with a concrete paver sidewalk, and even on dry
nights, I would find them going between the beds and the lawn area via the
walkway. I could never determine the from/to direction, but learned to
scan the walkway first.
3) Favorite plants for slug eating in my gardens are:
Marigolds
Lilies
Iberis (perennial)
Lupines
Rock cress
Sedum (ground cover)
They do not like
Sedum autumn joy
Hollyhock
Foxglove
Roses
