I buy supercheap hot pepper at the discount store in big jars.  The main 
thing is to make sure it's HOT pepper (I think it says chili pepper)  It 
comes crushed or ground;  I prefer the ground because it coats the 
seeds.  The commercial "squirrel away" is basically the same thing.  I 
also use a lot more of it than the commercial product recommends;  as I 
fill the feeder, I sprinkle it on after every inch or two of seeds.

It has worked very well for me.  The squirrels were not only eating the 
seed, they were eating the cedar feeder, as well.  I haven't seen a 
squirrel in the feeder for years now, since I started using pepper.

Theoretically, it should work for other mammals and rodents.  (any 
critter with salivary glands), but I'd think you'd need to make it into 
a spray, and reapply it after rain--'course, that wouldn't be a problem 
here!!
