You people would never believe my garden at this point. It has surely
gone from the sublime (this spring) to the ridiculous. Among my
purchases from the horrendous Michigan Bulb Co, I received as a free
gift some little bulbs. They were called patchwork petals and were
supposed to grow to 6 inches tall. I figured "what the heck, I'll
plant them", and I did indeed plant them in the very front of my
garden. They began to grow and reached 6 inches very quickly. When
they were a foot tall, I thought,"My, these are energetic little guys
and surely must think my garden is the cat's meow to be growing so
enthusiastically". When they reached 2 ft. in height, I began to
wonder what in the heck was going on. At this point, they were very
sturdy swordlike greenery and were doing a nice job of providing
support for my floppy campanulas and painted daisies. One of them
looked a little odd..not quite like the others, but by now my
curiousity had been aroused and I overcame my instinct to just rip
them out. By last week, they were 3 ft tall..in fact taller than
anything else in my garden because I had cut back most things and the
other plants were only 2 ft at most. Remember, these things are
arranged like soldiers marching in a row in the very front of my
garden. By now, the odd one was looking really weird. This morning,
after a nice rain, I checked by garden and burst out laughing. These
monsters are 4 ft tall. (I measured with my trusty Stanley tape
measure )and the odd one has now been identified. It is a stalk of
CORN. I can't decide what to do..is it sweet corn, in which case I'll
let it grow. Is it cow corn..I really don't think I need cow corn
enhancing my garden. Meanwhile, I have no idea what the other things
are. I'm wondering if they are going to be enormous gladiolas or
something.
That's not all the strange news. Remember back last spring when I
told you about all the plants I put in that never showed up. If you
recall, I planted other things in the bare spots. Then to my dismay,
things began to appear amid my shasta daisies, prompting the GREAT
MOVE. Well, other strange things are starting to appear growing amid
my stokesia. I can't imagine what they are. They look like retarded
lupines. We are talking here of flower stalks about 2 inches long. I
can't decide whether I should just leave them and try moving them in
the fall or waiting to move them in the spring. In actuality, they
are probably a rare exotic weed that will spread and destroy
everything in it's path.
All things considered, I have cancelled any plans I may have for a
garden party. One look at my strange garden and I would be committed
to the local looney bin. I will surely keep you informed of the
progress of my marching soldiers...( If they ever flower ). Any
suggestions on the stalk of corn would be appreciated.
