RE: Bush Mallow - Lavatera maritima

Hi Don, I have grown Lavatera maritima, 'Barnsley', rosea, olbia and
'Burgundy Wine' both in my garden and in pots for the nursery. I lost every
single one of the maritimas (and none of the others) during winter much to
my dismay. The wholesale growers here in zone 8b list it as a tender
perennial whereas the other are listed hardy to zone 6. I have a new
maritima planted in the ground and plan to prune it hard about Thanksgiving,
put it in a 5-10 gal pot and keep it under the GH bench. I have had
Lavateras become terribly pot bound in the nursery and still continue to
bloom their heads off, so I don't think the "slow repotting" is your
problem. Did you have a look at the roots when you knocked it out of the 1
gal pot? If all else fails (and maybe for insurance) take some 6 inch tip
cuttings to root and start over. This plant is so beautiful, I think it is
well worth the trouble.

I have five of these 'wonderful monsters'. They've grown 6 feet tall and
just as
wide in just two years. I have mine planted in the ground but then I'll only
in
zone 7. I cut them back late fall and they winter over great. They have
just
started blooming (we have late summers here) and will continue blooming till
frost. I LOVE them. They make great long lasting cut flowers as well as
wonderful screens. The ones doing the best are actually in a dry area -
facing
south. I look through my books and see how winter hardy they are.
