Your smallish black caterpillar things may just be newly hatched guys - no way of
identifying them yet, but most if not all caterpillars are susceptible to spraying
with Bt which comes in different brand names - Thuricide, Dipel, etc.
But they may also be the larvae of a butterfly. I can rarely kill the Black
Swallowtail larvae which munch up the carrot foliage - I only want the roots, they
can have the leaves (well, some of them).
But flowers are different - you can always hand pick them off.
