July Gardens

The only saving graces in my garden in July are the phlox, lilies, and
buddleas. All are pretty much drought tolerant once established and their
cool colors tone down the heat. Now I have a lot of white blooming which
is glaring during the day, but when I'm in the garden in the late
evening/night when its cooler, it's a lovely sight.

I like the phlox 'David' with russian sage behind it and nepeta 'Six Hills
Giant' at its feet. Oriental lilies like 'Casablanca' are regal above the
foamy lavendar-white of calamintha. Buddleas stand can keep a border going
on their own because of their bulkiness, height, and sheer number of those
long trusses which attract every winged insect around. The bouquets this
time of year are heady with these scents.

Other more garish plants include the crepe myrtle bushes (trees further
south) that are absolutely loaded with hot pink clusters of blooms. This
is right in the middle of a long border and since most things are listless,
this is like a big fireworks display! There are other deep pink perennials
in bloom in this same border (purple coneflowers, lythrum, etc) and a
smattering of golds (black-eyed susans, helianthus, coreopsis, etc.) that
are offset by the purples and maroons of the foliage of different
perennials (heucheras, lysimachias, etc). Never underestimate the power of
a good foliage plant! Every year I sing their praises a little louder
during the summer.
