I have read many of the lamentations about our July gardens. I am guilty of
lamenting as well. Today, ironically enough, I received my copy of the
Natureworks newsletter which touches on this subject. The original article
comes from the Totoket Times. Here is a portion of which is a lesson we
should learn (or at least me!):
************
Gardening teaches you to be very much IN
THE MOMENT. The most beautiful flowers are
fleeting - roses, peonies, irises poppies all are
beloved by gardeners around the world, yet all have
short bloom periods, peaks when they make your
heart sing, quickly collapsing into sodden mass of
spent blooms. So many people complain and lament
this fact. Instead, we should learn the lesson that the
garden is trying to teach us: celebrate the moment!
Don’t think about tomorrow; revel in the glorious
beauty that you are experiencing right now. Stop
and enjoy. Perennial gardens clearly have peaks and
valleys.

The article goes on. I think it is a good philosophy and will try to remember
it every time I personally lament of the state of my July gardens.
