I wanted to report on the result of my pruning of the unopened flower heads of my
Annabelle hydrangea a la "The Well Tended Perennial Garden". My purpose was to make
smaller and more numerous flower heads so they wouldn't flop on the ground. Well, I
guess it worked, there are now lots of new flower buds from about the size of a
quarter to a half dollar. They should bloom next month, but I should have done it
earlier, I think, with the short summers around here. (With the awful heat and
humidity, I can't wait for autumn!)
My daylilies are at their peak, Buddleias just starting, Oriental lilies are great
(oh, so fragrant!). The golden rod has started, which is early, as well as the
'Goldsturm' Black-eyed Susans. I bought a pink balloon flower this year and it has a
few flowers. I have religiously deadheaded the Campanula 'Kent Bells' and it is still
going strong. Man, I love that plant! One of the phlox has a nice(?) case of powdery
mildew going. And the earwigs seem to like the air conditioning; they are always
coming in the house.
