Devin-
Yes 4 o'clocks self sow - aggressively so be careful. One of my nicest
surprises last year and this was that a hot pink 4 o'clock self sowed and
grew up right in the middle of my Salvia 'indigo spires'---talk about a nice
combo in the afternoons...WOW! This salvia get very big and the 4 o'clock
hung right in there with size.....the foliage is nothing special but it is
not displeasing...and always pinching is always in order for business.
Nice foliage summer bloomer is the hamelia (sp) - hummingbird bush--I'm not
sure if this is a perennial or not...maybe just considered a shrub---is it
herbaceous when it dies to the ground????? but really nice foliage......nice
green with red stems and leaf veining.
Also the acanthus always provide a nice foliage - very architectural. The
clerodendrum bungei is a nice foliage plant...although a very aggressive
spreader---deep green large leafed...the blooms are wonderful...large pink
pom poms - about 6" diameter. (pictured in Logee's) This is a plant you
could contain in a pot and just place in a 'hole' in the garden.
Salvia leucantha has wonder gray foliage - not to mention the wonderful
purple & white fuzzy blooms in the fall. Any type of red grass is
wonderful.....now I'm just getting wordy...there are many many options---I
too have finally gone for foliage 1st bloom combo second.
Just one more mention - look at the house plants - sometimes you can get
these really reasonable and they make wonderful garden foliage plants in your
outdoor garden-----I use them all of the time. You wouldn't believe the size
the "houseplant'" gets when planted in the ground. If you want to overwinter
these guys - you can either take cuttings or dig 'em up - root prune and you
have a nice winter foliage plant for indoors.
