Dean, have you considered growing lupines as biennials. I read that advice
in one of the first Christopher Lloyd books and it is the way to go. Grow
them from seed in a row (he casually says - spare plot) and try to get a
large healthy plant by fall. In the fall move them to the garden where they
flower the next year.
Lupines do not live in a healthy blooming state for many years even if
wintered over. The best blooming hybrid lupines are young plants.
