Question about Rhizopon: I was told that rooting
hormones become
inactive within hours of exposure to light. Do you know if
this is true?
These days I only buy little packets of rooting powder, as
much as I can
use at once.

Dear Janet
There are three plant rooting hormones which have been used
for plant propagation
The rooting hormone IAA is naturally produced in plants. It
is both sensitive to light and heat. it is only used for
micropropagation in the laboratory. it is not useful for a
wide range of plants
The rooting hormone NAA is a simulator of IAA is is farely
stable but it has a limited number of plants which is it
useful for propagation
The rooting hormone IBA is a simulator of IAA is very
stable. It is not sensitive to light and is temperature
stable at normal temeratures. It is useful for a very wide
range of plants for propagation
In general, if the package of plant rooting hormones are
kept a room temperatur or below, in the original container,
sealed from moisture, and light tight the product should
last many years.
The most important factor is to take off enough for one time
use and discard the portion taken off. Never never return
the used portion to the stock container...you will drag in
plant pathogens which will cause the stock material to
biologically decay.
