Re: Moving large Rhody


If this is as big as "I" could imagine, I would recommend getting a few more people and a pick up truck.  Rhodies are easy to move and have mostly shallow hair like roots.  You may see a few deep tap roots, so try and give it some TLC. If you see any deep tap roots, it will be a pain to rock it out of place.  You may need a six foot pick to break any of deep roots or a good pair loppers.  When you dig into the soil, dig around the plant and not into the plant. Don't point the shovel towards the plant.  This process causes less damage to the roots.

Another area to focus on is preparing the soil for the new location.   Be sure you soil is well turned and it has plenty of peatmoss intermixed.   Soak the soil prior to planting and be sure to give it plenty of water in the following weeks.   The rhody, may not bloom for two years.
