Slugs, snails and mildew

Hi,

Does anyone have any tried and tested remedies for slugs and snails.  This
is my second year of gardening and they have started to dine on my prized
perennials.

Also I have heard about sprays you can make with (?) detergent to keep away
mildew.

Would love any information
