Claire, I wonder if they're the tuberous Mertensia Virginica 
instead--Virginia Bluebells.  A local daffodil friend had hundreds growing in 
an area she wanted to convert to a daffodil bed.  I was the lucky recipient 
of what she was going to throw away.  Now I have them everywhere.  I don't 
think it is possible to have too many.
