Well, Susan, it is quite feasible. I moved 700 plants of all kinds;
perennials, shrubs, conifers and small trees. A LOT of WORK. But very feasible and in
fact, one of the great events in my lifetime( hmmm).
Get help. I had a couple yards of soil delivered and three friends helped in
the diggin & pottin operation. You need A LOT of POTS. I also mixed in a lot
of peat moss to soften the soil. This was done from Mid October into early
December. All of the perennials were delivered to my daughters and buried in her
veggie garden and/or covered with leaves. A LOT of TRIPS in my stretch van.
Essentally, the perennials all made it. I had too many losses on trees,
mostly because they didn't like the fast diggin process in late Nov/Dec and very
poor overwintering, that being the real problem.
We moved into our new three acre mini farm on March 9 2000 when it was 60
degrees.
Started planning ( total of 5 minutes) , then planting and haven't stopped
since, though the moved plants made it into the ground within the 2000 growing
season.
The reason we did this so fast is because I thought it would take 6 months,
maybe more to find the "gardeners heaven" , but it was found the first time
out; barn, stream spring house and just the right place to eat & sleep; some call
it home.
As for the holes, no I did not plant grass, but I did leave alot behind ( the
common stuff ) and filled holes with the likes of echinacea, rudibeckia,
hosta green. The one sad note is that I was forced to leave a 22 year old
Japanese maple, Acer palmatum dissectum 'Watnong, 7 ft high,8 ft wide, which now for
the first time is being propagated. To make matters worse. the new owner with
young children "grassed the entire place. And the japanese maple died from
drought stress..........besides, said the new owner, it didn't provide any
shade.
Well, as you can imagine, I can talk for hours on the experience, but it can
only be understood by those who do it. Therefore, I say, DO IT!
